What is Krudant in Sanskrit?

कृदन्त is a combination of two words कृत् + अन्त.
कृत् means verb and अन्त means ending. So कृदन्त literally means verb endings. These are suffixes added at the end of the word. They are known as Participles in English.
In other words, suffixes (प्रत्यय) which appear at the end of क्रिया (verb) or धातु (verb root) are called कृदन्त.

There are following 4 types of कृदन्त E.g.,

Combining रम् धातु with कृदन्त घञ् प्रत्यय produces राम शब्द.
Let us look at each of them in detail

सम्बन्धभूत कृदन्त (Relative past participle)

This कृदन्त is formed by adding त्वा, ट्वा, ध्वा and य to verbs.

हेत्वर्थ कृदन्त (Infinitive of purpose)

This कृदन्त is formed by adding तुम्, टुम्, धुम् to verbs.

भूत कृदन्त (Past participle)

भूत कृदन्त is further sub divided into

कर्मणि भूत कृदन्त

This type of कृदन्त is formed by adding तः, ता, तं, टः, नः to verbs.

कर्तरि भूत कृदन्त

This type of कृदन्त is formed by adding वान and वाती to verbs.

विध्यर्थ कृदन्त (Potential participle)

This कृदन्त is formed by adding तव्य, टव्य, अनीय य to verbs.
